I have to recommend against this particular product because it was so very slow and Linksys Customer Support
could not figure out why.
I purchased this wireless access point along with 2 Linksys wireless PCMCIA cards for our laptops. Once connected,
we measured the throughput of the wireless connection with the laptops right next to the access point, with the signal strength
at 100% and the signal quality at 93%. We got a miserable 500k throughput, when the device was advertised
at 11Mbps (which gives a reasonable expectation of about 5Mbps after Ethernet and security overhead).
It is also very hard to contact customer support at Linksys. Calling the help line results in a 20 minute wait, after
which they finally just take your phone number and say they will have a tech call you back at some future unspecified time.
Email usually goes unanswered. Once I finally got through to them, they could not figure out why I was getting such horrible
data transfer speeds, and could only recommend I take the unit back, which I did (for good).
The product does support 40 and 64 bit WEP security, but enabling this causes the speed to drop by almost 50% according to
some users who have done so. The Linksys PCMCIA cards do (supposedly) following various wireless standards, so they should
be compatible with other wireless access points, such as you might have at work.
All in all, I have to recommend against this product because of it's horrible and unexplained slow speed.
